The £18m Design and Build project was delivered on time and on budget in just 67 weeks under the Defcon 2000 contracting framework. Integrated Group provided M&E Services at a cost of £4m and Paul Osborne acted as Lead Electrical Designer and M&E Project Manager on behalf of contractors Integrated Group and Clark Construction Limited.

The hangar covers approximately 6960 sq m with a 4680 sq m annex that houses support offices, workshops and avionics regional centre for the development and maintenance of electronic equipment.

The hangar enables specialist deep maintenance of the aircraft and is split into ten bays, each of which has been equipped with compressed air, hydraulic connections and specialist aviation electrical power packs to allow maintenance engineers to operate the aircraft systems without the need to run the engines. The building also includes stores, mess areas, locker rooms, showers and plant rooms as well as a 300 space car parking area.

The hangar M&E services comprise HVAC, LPHW heating to workshops and offices, DHW & CWS for toilet facities and showers, high pressure hydraulic system, compressed air system, sprinkler fire suppression system, foam deluge fire suppression system, BMS, Infra red fire detection to each aircraft bay, general fire detection and alarm system fully integrated with the station fire alarm, low energy lighting throughout, daylight dimming low energy lighting to hanger, emergency lighting throughout, 230V electrical outlets to workshops and offices, 400V outlets to hanger and workshops, 400Hz ground power units to maintenance bays and avionics centre, GPS repeaters, secure and non-secure data communications, station tannoy system and two HV/LV substations with dual low loss transformers giving 50% redundancy for power security. The project achieved a 'Very Good' DREAM rating (Defence Related Environmental Assessment Method).
