A few years ago high tides, strong winds and low atmospheric pressure resulted in the River Humber breaching flood defences and deluging the cement plant and surrounding community with water two metres high. The flood had swept through the site cutting off the 11,000 volt electric supply and destroying 30 switch rooms and 2 substations. Today over 6.4 kilometres of high voltage cable has been laid to create a new infrastructure of cables to supply the various operations throughout the site. These cables lead to one electrical substation, which houses modern electrical switchgear. In addition 30 switchrooms have been rebuilt along with the vast majority of the site's electrical systems, a huge undertaking. Other efficiencies such as LED lighting have been built in to the systems to provide savings in electricity.

Paul Osborne of Qintec was employed as Electrical Project Manager by one of the main electrical contractors, Qube Specialist Maintenance, to project manage the refurbishment, replacement, testing and commissioning of the electrical infrastructure for Cement Mill 4 and Kiln 2. The remit was to have Cement Mill 4 and Kiln 2 back in production within 12 months of the flood. This immense task involved the rebuilding of 16 switchrooms, including the replacement of field wiring and field equipment.

Paul delivered this very challenging project within the timeframe and budget estimates with the help of a hand picked team of highly motivated supervisors, and over 30 highly skilled electricians.

Kiln 2 is back in production at CEMEX UK South Ferriby, almost exactly a year after the flooding of December 2013.

May 2014 saw Cement Mill 4 commissioned and able to mill existing clinker product stored on site. December 2014 saw Kiln 2 commissioned and it is producing high quality clinker to make into cement for customers in the construction industry. Over the last 12 months considerable work has gone into the plant to reinstate production but more than this, establish a production plant of the future.
